Over the past 5 years, as part of a broad and growing impetus to measure the quality of U.S. healthcare, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) began designing and coordinating measurement sets for specific neurological disorders. The first epilepsy quality measures were approved in 2009. Eight measures were published, covering diagnosis, evaluation, counselling, and referral (Neurology 2011; 76:94). All of these measures have been adopted by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as requirements for performance-in-practice (PIP) maintenance of certification (MOC). Three measures have even been adopted into pay-for-performance programs.
