Severe sepsis is defined as suspected or proven infection plus at least two systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria (temperature >38.0° or <36°C; heart rate >90/min; respiratory rate >20/min or partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide <32 mm Hg; or white blood cell count >12,000 or <4000/µL) and acute organ failure. In addition to these factors, septic shock requires the presence of persistent hypotension with need for vasopressors. It has not been clear whether the organ failures in severe sepsis and septic shock occur in characteristic clusters.
