Arthralgia (joint pain or stiffness) occurs in up to half of women receiving aromatase inhibitors (AIs) for breast cancer and is the most common reason for poor adherence to therapy with these agents. To determine whether exercise can help relieve AI-associated arthralgia, investigators randomized 121 physically inactive breast cancer survivors on AI therapy for ≥6 months to a 1-year intervention (twice-weekly supervised strength training and 150 minutes weekly of home-based aerobic exercise) or usual care. Mean age of participants was 61, 88% were white, 60% had stage I breast cancer, and mean time between diagnosis and enrollment was 3 years.
