Clinical infections due to Cryptococcus gattii were first noted on Vancouver Island, Canada, in 1999 and have since been reported on mainland British Columbia (BC) and in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. Noting that no longitudinal study had been performed among these patients, a consortium of infectious diseases researchers (with support from Astellas and Pfizer) performed a retrospective chart review of cases of C. gattii infection seen in BC from 1999 through 2007.
Among the 152 cases that met inclusion criteria, 111 were culture confirmed; 105 (69%) were pulmonary-only and 47 (31%) involved central nervous system (CNS) infection with or without lung infection. Only five patients with culture-confirmed infection were HIV positive. Among …
