In 2000, Term Breech Trial investigators reported that planned vaginal breech delivery had higher rates of perinatal mortality and serious morbidity than planned cesarean delivery, prompting the recommendation of cesarean delivery as the safest option for term singleton breech presentation. However, Term Breech Trial follow-up showed that at 2 years, rates of death or neurodevelopmental delay did not differ significantly for planned vaginal or cesarean delivery. Thus, planned vaginal breech delivery came to be considered a reasonable option in carefully selected cases, thereby resulting in a modest increase in breech vaginal delivery rates.
