Since 2002, when findings from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) were first published, clinicians have been cautioned not to prescribe menopausal hormone therapy for women at excess risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In a prospective cohort study, Swedish investigators analyzed national registry data from 41,000 women (age range, 40–74) who initiated statin use between 2006 and 2007 because of known CVD (secondary prevention) or in the absence of known CVD (primary prevention). Women were followed from 12 months after statin initiation until the end of 2011 (mean follow-up, 4 years).
