Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been shown safe and effective for treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection and is currently under study for its potential in treating other gastrointestinal disorders.
In the first randomized, controlled trial of FMT for active ulcerative colitis, 70 patients received donor FMT (50 mL) or placebo (50 mL of water) via enema weekly for 6 weeks. The primary outcome was remission (Mayo score ≤2 and endoscopic Mayo score=0 at week 7). Results were as follows:
The rate of remission in the FMT group was 9 of 38 (24%) versus 2 of 37 (5%) in the placebo group (P=0.03).
Seven of the nine patients in remission after FMT had the same individual donor.
