Tube placement for enteral feeding, including percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), is performed by providers from various specialties. Investigators evaluated the predictors of PEG placement in the U.S. using data on upper endoscopy procedures performed between 2000 and 2010.
Variables analyzed included patient and provider demographics, procedure details and setting, and location and characteristics of the site where the procedure was performed. Results were as follows:
Placement of PEG tubes accounted for 1.7% of upper gastrointestinal procedures.
The majority (76%, P<0.001) of procedures were performed by gastroenterologists, but this percentage varied among years and generally decreased over time.
