Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common inflammatory ulcer of the oral cavity. RAS usually presents in childhood or adolescence and can be found in up to 40% of children. Ulcers are categorized as major (>1 cm), minor (<1 cm), or herpetiform. RAS is usually idiopathic but can be associated with Behçet disease (BD), periodic fever with aphthae pharyngitis and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome, cyclic neutropenia, Sweet syndrome, and nutritional deficiencies.
