Helicobacter pylori infection, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and low-dose aspirin (LDA) can each cause peptic ulcer disease (PUD). To determine the potential interaction of these factors, investigators in Spain conducted a multicenter, case-control study of 666 patients hospitalized with major PUD bleeding and an equal number of controls matched by gender, age, and month of admission.
H. pylori infection was identified by serology, and use of NSAIDs and LDA (considered separately from other NSAIDs) was determined by questionnaire. H. pylori infection was significantly more common in cases than controls (74.3% vs. 54.8%), as was NSAID use (34.5% vs. 13.4%) and LDA use (15.8% vs. 12.0%).
