Preeclampsia, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and gestational diabetes carry cardiovascular risks comparable to obesity and smoking. To assess clinicians' knowledge of these risks, investigators surveyed 175 internists and 71 gynecologists at a leading academic medical center.
Although most participants reported that they assessed pregnancy history when considering women's cardiovascular risk, fewer probed for histories of pregnancy with fetal growth restriction (8% of internists; 52% of gynecologists) than preeclampsia (55% of internists; 75% of gynecologists) or gestational diabetes (66% of internists and gynecologists). Years in practice did not predict clinicians' approach to screening women for cardiovascular risk factors.
