Soy contains isoflavones, which are micronutrients that have estrogen-like properties. Genistein (an isoflavone found in soy) lowers synthesis of eosinophil leukotriene C4 and has been associated with improved lung function in population studies.
In a multicenter U.S. trial, 386 adolescent and adult patients (age, ≥12) with uncontrolled asthma despite use of daily controller medications were randomized to twice-daily soy isoflavones (50 mg) or placebo. Patients continued their usual controller medications: 97% were using inhaled corticosteroids, 75% were receiving long-acting β-agonists, and 34% were using oral antileukotrienes.
