Increasingly, prediabetes has been regarded as a cause of peripheral neuropathy. However, in a recent Mayo Clinic study, prevalence of polyneuropathy among prediabetic patients was similar to that of controls (NEJM JW Gen Med May 1 2012 and Arch Neurol 2012; 69:339; Diabetes Care 2012; 35:584). Now, researchers in Canada have revisited this issue in 467 people without known diabetes who were at high risk for type 2 diabetes because of factors such as family history or obesity. According to fasting glucose levels and oral glucose tolerance testing, 74% were euglycemic, 21% had prediabetes, and 5% met criteria for diabetes.
