Although most people with concussion recover clinically within days to weeks, some have more persistent neurobehavioral changes, including episodic memory impairment. Recent interest has focused on distinct neuropathological changes identified in the brains of deceased players from the National Football League, termed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and on evidence of hippocampal volume loss in collegiate athletes with histories of concussion compared with those without concussion.
