The high incidence of undesired pregnancy in the U.S. makes induced abortion one of the most common gynecologic procedures. As many communities lack abortion providers, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended in 2014 that all residency programs provide opt-out training in pregnancy termination.
To encourage a subtly shaded discussion of abortion among obstetrician–gynecologists, one residency program that facilitates open dialogue and respect across diverse viewpoints shared four residents' narratives about their abortion training. These diverse viewpoints demonstrate that clear-cut distinctions regarding abortion rarely exist when one is immediately responsible for the care of pregnant women.
