Obesity has been shown to elevate risk for certain cancers, but its association with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear.
To assess the independent effect of obesity on HCC risk, as well as the interactive effects of obesity with other HCC risk factors, investigators at a single hospital enrolled 622 patients with newly diagnosed HCC, recruited from the hospital's outpatient gastrointestinal and surgical oncology clinics (cases), and 660 control patients who were healthy, genetically unrelated family members of cases (e.g., spouses). Cases and controls were frequency-matched by age and sex. Self-reported weight, height, and body size were recorded at various ages. Obesity was defined as a body-mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2.
