Investigators in Japan retrospectively reviewed 2135 patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction (MI) between 2001 and 2013. After excluding those with prior MI or prior known coronary artery disease (CAD), 1776 patients remained. The authors defined major criteria for coronary artery embolism (CE) MI to include evidence of CE and thrombosis, but not atherosclerosis, on angiography, along with multisite CE and concomitant systemic embolism. Minor criteria included <25% stenosis in other arteries, evidence of an embolic source detected by any imaging modality, and coexistence of a potential for thromboembolic disease (most commonly atrial fibrillation [AF]).
