Clinical practice guidelines, derived from research evidence and expert opinion, were introduced in the early 1980s to aid practitioners in diagnosing and managing specific diseases. Since then, clinical guidelines have proliferated to the extent that in cardiology, eight clinical guidelines, totaling 439 pages and 2127 references, were published in 2014 by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.
Now, members of the Multicenter Cardiac Research Group, who contend that guidelines are often too long, detailed, and absolute, have proposed the following recommendations for making guidelines more practical, accessible, and interactive for practicing cardiologists:
