Previous reports have indicated that severe sepsis (SS) accounts for more than 750,000 hospitalizations, 572,000 emergency department visits, 200,000 deaths, and $20 billion in expenditures annually in the U.S. The numerous epidemiological studies that have dealt with this issue have not distinguished among SS cases by origin — that is, whether they were community acquired (CA), healthcare associated (HCA), or hospital acquired (HA). Now, researchers have analyzed adult discharge data from the University HealthSystem Consortium, a national collaborative of 300 hospitals affiliated with many of the leading academic medical centers in the U.S., to provide such details.
