The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest integrated provider of HIV care in the country. Now, researchers have used VA databases to study the clinical care and treatment adherence of HIV-infected veterans.
Backus and colleagues used the VA's HIV Clinical Case Registry to assess cascade-of-care performance for veterans who received an HIV diagnosis before June 2013 and were alive through December 2013 (N=25,480). In this cohort, 77% were engaged in care (i.e., ≥2 clinic visits during the preceding year, with ≥1 visit in each 6-month period), 73% were on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 65% had virologic suppression (<200 copies/mL).
