The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends same-day placement of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants to help reduce barriers to use of these highly effective reversible contraceptives. To assess the extent to which such contraceptives are offered in one visit and to identify reasons why multiple visits may be required, researchers surveyed 636 California practices offering state-funded family planning services.
In 2011, 67% of responding clinics offered onsite placement of IUDs, and 40% offered subdermal contraceptive implants.
