Phenotypic variations of major depressive disorder (MDD) and diverse environmental factors confound genetic studies and support investigations of circumscribed populations, such as the Han Chinese women in this study. The study was limited to women because of sex differences in genetic liability to MDD.
Analyses involved 5303 patients with recurrent MDD (mean, 5.6 episodes; age range, 30–60) and no substance use disorders before MDD onset and 5337 controls. Controls had neither personal nor family histories of major psychiatric disorders.
