Ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) has dramatically altered the treatment of patients with this condition. In 15 years, ablation has evolved from inconceivable to commonplace as a cure. Although the optimal ablation strategy is not yet clear, complete and permanent isolation of the pulmonary veins appears to underlie most successful approaches. Two commercially available technologies vying for the top therapeutic rung are radiofrequency (RF; heat) and cryoablation (cold).
