We are rapidly approaching an era when we will run out of weapons against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and Clostridium difficile. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) constitute a large part of the problem. Despite some progress in limiting HAIs through antibiotic stewardship and interrupting transmission, we have not managed to stem the tide.
