Several recent studies have examined outcomes in children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) of varying severity.
Peterson and colleagues studied a series of 278 children with mild TBI (mean age, 15 years; 56% male) who were referred for neuropsychological testing because of persistent symptoms (mean, 2 months). Overall, 48% had a previous TBI; 61% had sports-related TBIs. On a well-validated instrument assessing emotional and behavioral functioning, parent-reported preinjury anxiety was elevated. Children rated at risk for behavioral problems (including conduct problems) and somatization had more previous mild TBIs. However, investigators could not tell whether preinjury problems increased TBI risk or prior TBIs led to the problems.
