International panels recommend the use of scoring systems to stratify patients with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) based on the need for endoscopy or endoscopic therapy and mortality risk. Most prior studies have been conducted in Western populations.
In a prospective cohort study, investigators in Korea compared the abilities of three scoring systems (the Glasgow-Blatchford Score [GBS], the Rockall pre-endoscopy score [pre-RS], and the Rockall post-endoscopy score [RS]) to predict the need for therapeutic intervention, rebleeding, and death in 1584 patients admitted to one of eight hospitals with a diagnosis of UGIB.
