The definition of gastritis has been vague or contradictory depending upon whether symptoms or histology have been the basis for classification. Prior consensus statements required refinement when Helicobacter pylori was identified as a common infectious cause of gastritis. Faculty from various professional associations attending this meeting reviewed literature and developed 24 evidence-based consensus statements on the classification of gastritis and duodenitis.
