HIV infections could be significantly decreased in high-risk populations if enough at-risk individuals received prescriptions for — and adhered to — pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the southern U.S. are recognized to be at high risk for acquiring HIV. Atlanta had the second-highest city-specific number of new HIV infections among MSM in the U.S. in 2011, an HIV prevalence of 43% among black MSM (vs. 13% among white MSM), and an HIV incidence of 11% for black MSM aged 18 to 25.
