For patients with hip and femoral neck fractures, regional nerve blocks provide effective analgesia, but whether they provide superior analgesia to other pain control regimens is unclear. To investigate, researchers performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies that compared regional femoral nerve block (traditional femoral nerve block, 3-in-1 femoral nerve block, or fascia iliaca compartment block) with opiate analgesia, acetaminophen, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria; an emergency provider performed the block in five and ultrasound-guidance was used in one.
