Treatment of gonorrhea is complicated by increasing antimicrobial resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and drug allergies. Solithromycin is a fluoroketolide antibiotic that acts at multiple sites on the bacterial ribosome and has substantial in vitro activity against N. gonorrhoeae, including azithromycin-resistant strains. It also has activity against other common sexually transmitted pathogens, including Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium.
In a two-center, phase II, open-label, manufacturer-funded study, 59 patients with suspected cervical or urethral gonorrhea received a single oral dose of solithromycin. The first 28 participants received 1200 mg once, as six capsules, and the next 31 received 1000 mg, as five capsules. Prior…
