Wild poliovirus type 2 was eliminated in 1999, and wild type 3 has been undetected since November 2012. Vaccine-associated polio cases continue, however, with Sabin type-2 viruses causing >95% of them. Global polio eradication requires halting circulation of all three wild poliovirus serotypes and discontinuing use of live oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). Such progress necessitates a new vaccination schedule, with routine use of trivalent inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV).
