Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents 5% of female genital tract cancers; it has a wide range of clinical and pathologic features. Human papillomavirus (HPV)–dependent and independent tumor types overlap. These authors explored the pathogenesis, classification, and prognosis of the two types in 97 patients at a tertiary care institution. Histologic analysis, immunohistochemical staining (for p16, p53, and EGFR), in situ hybridization for high-risk HPV, and fluorescence in situ hybridization for EGFR gene amplification were performed.
