Prophylactic closure of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) sites immediately post-EMR has become popular because it prevents delayed complications. Patients undergoing piecemeal EMR typically undergo a repeat colonoscopy at 3 to 6 months post-EMR to examine the site for presence of residual adenomatous tissue.
In a single-center, prospective study, investigators reexamined 111 clipped EMR sites for clipping-related artifacts on the scar at first follow-up colonoscopy. Artifacts were present in 29 of 62 sites (47%) examined and included small bumps with a normal pit pattern and granulation tissue. The artifacts caused by the clips could be easily distinguished from residual polyp.
