Gene-expression assays have been used by clinicians for the last several years to complement clinical assessment of prognosis in patients with early-stage breast cancer and to aid in predicting benefit from chemotherapy. The most common assay used by U.S. oncologists is the 21-gene Oncotype Dx assay (Genomic Health), which generates a numeric recurrence score (RS) corresponding with lowest to highest risk (RS score 0–100, respectively) for distant recurrence at 10 years in patients intending to receive adjuvant endocrine therapy for estrogen receptor (ER)–positive, axillary node–negative breast cancer.
