Chemopreventive Agents for Recurrent Colorectal Adenomas Strike Out

Previous randomized, controlled trials have demonstrated benefits of calcium supplementation and low-dose aspirin in reducing the risk for recurrent colorectal adenomas after colonoscopy. Also, low vitamin D3 levels have been associated with elevated colorectal adenoma prevalence and cancer risk. Now, results of two new randomized, controlled trials on the chemopreventive efficacy of these agents are reported.

In one trial, 2259 participants aged 45 to 75 years with a recent history of colorectal adenomas received daily supplementation with vitamin D3 (1000 IU), calcium carbonate (1200 mg), both, or placebo.
