Although retinoblastoma is rare, pediatricians regularly screen for it because early diagnosis is key to the preservation of vision and ocular salvage. Using U.S. cancer surveillance data, researchers evaluated disparities in care and outcomes in 830 children diagnosed with retinoblastoma from 2000 to 2010 (age range, 0 to 9 years; 32% Hispanic, 15% black, 41% white non-Hispanic). At diagnosis, extraocular disease was present in 24% of all children, and Hispanic children had a significantly higher rate compared with non-Hispanic children (33% vs. 20%).
