Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) can be difficult to diagnose clinically, leading to both overuse and misuse of antibiotic therapy. However, genome-wide transcriptional profiling of blood leukocytes might be able to differentiate infectious from noninfectious causes of disease.
To test this hypothesis, investigators conducted a study at two tertiary care centers in the Netherlands. A total of 234 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with suspected CAP were divided by admission date into discovery and validation cohorts. Enrollees were classified as CAP patients or controls (no CAP) by post hoc analysis. Blood samples collected within 24 hours of admission were used for analysis.
