Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by intense itching and intermittent eczematous rash that, with asthma and allergic rhinitis, makes up the atopic triad. Many cases resolve in early childhood, but disease persists into adulthood in up to 10% of patients. Studies on AD immunopathogenesis show that IL-4 and IL-13 are key mediators of the inflammatory response. The monoclonal antibody dupilumab targets the receptor on cells to which IL-4 and IL-13 bind, inhibiting their action. Dupilumab is efficacious for asthma and chronic sinusitis, and preliminary studies have shown that it is effective for AD, as well.
