Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 3 infection is considered difficult to treat without peginterferon and ribavirin; sustained virologic response (SVR) rates are <60% among patients with cirrhosis and previous null response.
In an industry-sponsored, phase IIb study, researchers assessed the efficacy of once-daily oral alisporivir (a cyclophilin inhibitor) plus ribavirin (400 mg twice daily) with or without peginterferon (180 µg weekly) for 24 weeks in treatment-naive patients without cirrhosis infected with HCV genotype 2 or 3.
