The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak that began in late 2013 has provided much information about transmission of the underlying pathogen. Recent investigations suggest the presence of “immune-privileged” sites in humans that may account for delayed transmission of the virus, prompting reevaluation of the infectivity period and public health policy.
Based on preliminary evidence that semen may be one of these privileged sites, Mate and colleagues examined the case of a deceased female EVD patient who had had no known contact with anyone with acute EVD. However, she had reported having unprotected vaginal intercourse 20 days before her death with a male survivor of EVD whose symptoms had developed approximately 6 months earlier.
