A new standard of care for patients with esophageal cancer was established with the initial publication of the multicenter, randomized, controlled, phase III CROSS trial (NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Jul 2012 and N Engl J Med 2012; 366:2074), which indicated that adding preoperative chemoradiotherapy to surgery improved overall survival (OS) at a median follow-up of 45 months in those with resectable squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma of the esophagus or esophagogastric junction. The investigators now report long-term results at a median follow-up of 84 months for surviving patients.
