The only approved therapy for metastatic or unresectable hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is the multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib. Now, investigators have conducted an industry-sponsored, international, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III trial (STORM) to evaluate sorafenib as adjuvant therapy in HCC patients undergoing surgical resection or potentially curative local tumor ablation.
A total of 1114 patients at 202 sites received sorafenib (400 mg orally twice daily) or placebo for a maximum of 4 years. The majority of patients were male (81%–83%) and Asian (63%–61%) and had undergone prior resection (81%); approximately half (47%–51%) had hepatitis B as the underlying cause of disease.
