It is notoriously easy to underestimate the risk to a given patient from sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock. Several scoring systems that were originally designed to measure sepsis severity for research have been suggested as useful tools to determine which patients most need advanced resources, such as intensive care unit admission. In a prospective study, researchers compared the predictive value of five sepsis severity scores in nearly 9000 patients admitted from an Australian emergency department (ED) with suspected infection.
