The International Staging System (ISS), based on serum albumin and beta-2 microglobulin levels, is the standard prognostic scoring system for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma.
To evaluate the benefit of incorporating a patient's serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level (normal vs. abnormal) and the tumor-cell karyotype, as assessed by interphase fluorescent in situ hybridization (iFISH), investigators performed a retrospective analysis of myeloma patients enrolled in 11 multicenter therapeutic trials. High-risk iFISH included those with del(17p), t(4;14), and/or the t(14;16) translocation; all other iFISH markers were considered standard risk.
