Intravenous (IV) lidocaine has analgesic properties. Investigators in a single Iranian emergency department randomized 110 patients with renal colic to receive IV morphine (0.1 mg/kg) plus either lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg) or normal saline.
Patients rated pain and nausea on a visual analog scale before treatment and repeatedly for 2 hours after. There was no difference between the lidocaine and saline groups in pain relief, but median time to being nausea free was superior in the lidocaine group (27 vs. 58 minutes).
