Do obstetric outcomes vary by day of the week? To answer this question, investigators studied 1,332,835 deliveries in England from 2010 to 2012.
Delivery over the weekend versus on Monday through Friday was associated with slightly higher risk for perinatal mortality (adjusted odds ratio, 1.07; 95% confidence interval, 1.02–1.13), newborn birth injury (OR 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02–1.09), and maternal infection (OR 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01–1.11). Perinatal mortality per 1000 live births was 6.4 on weekdays and 7.3 on weekends. There was no significant difference between weekend and weekday delivery for outcomes such as perineal laceration or newborn infections.
