Some patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are referred for maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) — which involves maxillary and mandibular osteotomies to enlarge the upper airway — when other approaches are not tolerated or are ineffective. In a previous meta-analysis, MMA was associated with a mean drop in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) from 64 events to 10 events per hour and a cure rate of 43%. In this meta-analysis involving 518 patients, researchers assessed baseline factors that might predict success.
