Only a single prior study has addressed the actual risk for advanced adenomas detected by colonoscopy in first-degree relatives of patients with adenomas.
In the current prospective, cross-sectional study from Hong Kong, relatives of patients without colorectal cancer and without a family history of colorectal cancer, but who had one or more advanced adenomas and were aged 40 to 70 years, were invited to undergo colonoscopy. The control group were siblings of patients aged 40 to 70 years with a previous normal colonoscopy who also underwent colonoscopy for this study. The study groups comprised 200 siblings of patients with advanced adenomas and 400 siblings of patients with normal colonoscopies. Demographics were similar between the groups.…
