Although resistance to various antibiotics among Escherichia coli isolates is well recognized, colonization studies in healthy individuals are limited. To examine the proportion of young children with ciprofloxacin-resistant E. coli, investigators from two medical centers in St. Louis prospectively analyzed stool samples from 40 women with twin pregnancies. Stools were collected semiannually in the women. Samples were collected monthly to age 2 years and bimonthly thereafter in the twins for a median of 890 days (interquartile range, 678–1118 days).
