Cutaneous reactions can occur in the area of herpes zoster (HZ) infection weeks to years after the acute viral clinical presentation. These reactions can be benign processes (e.g., granulomatous dermatitis, lichenoid graft-versus-host disease, lichen sclerosus, and morphea) or malignant (e.g., T-cell lymphomas, leukemia cutis, and Kaposi sarcoma).
The authors retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathology of 26 patients with granulomatous dermatitis after HZ and 25 patients with acute HZ. Ages ranged from 5 to 85 years, and females outnumbered males 2 to 1. The most common clinical presentations were papules, plaques, and hyperpigmentation occurring on the head and neck.
